Come on a journey. Step across from the historic Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens to a treasure of history and culture.

The Melbourne Museum's award winning design begins at the glass atrium which opens onto a glorious combination of space, texture and shapes. Soaring glass walls, curved walls and bold, bright colours coalesce to guide guests on a journey through history.

The eight main galleries - each boasting permanent collections - bring to life stories from the birth of volcanoes to Phar Lap to the mysteries of the mind.

The museum's numerous spaces offer ready-made back drops for imaginative themes. From the beauty of Treetops overlooking a living rainforest to the blank canvas of Touring Hall, each space offers events a fresh opportunity to shine.

Museum Café

The Museum Café, located on the ground floor of the Melbourne Museum, offers a great variety of fresh, contemporary food to suit all tastes.

The café is family friendly, can provide high chairs and offers a special lunch box for kids. Adults are catered for with a selection of fresh hot and cold food, soft drinks, wine, espresso coffee and a selection of teas.

Opening hours: 10:00am - 4:30pm, seven days a week.

Questions & Answers

Can we hold events within the Museum spaces?

Yes, events can be held in some Museum spaces. Please speak with one of our Event Planners for further information.

Can we have pre dinner drinks in a different part of the Museum?

Yes, your package includes a complimentary space for pre dinner drinks in an adjoining area to your event. Please speak with one of our Event Planners for further information.

Can I have a wedding ceremony on site?

Yes, you can have a ceremony at the Melbourne Museum in conjunction with your wedding reception. The earliest time a ceremony can commence is 5.00pm.

Is there audio visual in any of the function rooms?

Yes, Treetops has a data projector, built in screen, lectern and microphone which are an additional cost. For all other spaces, please speak to one of our Event Planners to request a quote from our preferred supplier.

From what time can we access the Museum for our function?

You can access any Museum space from 4.30pm to begin set up. Should earlier access be required, please speak to one of our Event Planners to request approval from the Melbourne Museum.

Can we have cars displayed as part of our event?

Yes, you can display vehicles at the Melbourne Museum plaza in the forecourt as well as the Touring Hall and Main Foyer. Please speak to one of our Event Planners for confirmation as there are restrictions on certain vehicles.

Can we take photographs in the Museum spaces during our event?

Yes, on the condition that your guests are in the photographs. The Melbourne Museum does not allow images taken of its artefacts or exhibitions.

Can we have a Museum tour?

Yes, a private viewing of an exhibition space can be arranged. Please speak with one of our Event Planners to discuss upcoming exhibitions, a viewing charge may apply.

Can we hold an event during the day at the Museum?

Yes, you can hold events in Treetops and the Age Theatre during the day; the other Museum spaces are open to the public and are unavailable during this time.

What time does the Museum close to the public?

The Museum is open daily to the public from 10am to 5pm. It is only closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day.

How late can we extend our venue hire?

In accordance with Victorian Liquor Licensing Regulations, all functions must conclude by 1.00 am, with all guests to fully depart the premises by 1.30 am.

Do I need a security guard for my event?

Between the hours of 9am - 5pm, no security guard is required. Outside of these hours a security charge will apply, please speak to one of our Event Planners for further details.
