Located in Carlton Gardens opposite the historic Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Museum offers a range of unique venues for meetings, functions and events. The Melbourne Museum’s award winning design displays an innovative combination of space, texture and shapes; from soaring glass walls to bold, bright columns – resulting in a contemporary venue that houses Australia’s most treasured history.
Treetops is a light-filled purpose-built function room overlooking a living rainforest and opening onto an outdoor terrace – ideal for day conferences and evening functions. The blank canvas of Touring Hall is ideal for displays, large events and exhibitions and can be recreated to suit your requirements.
Melbourne Museum boasts eight main galleries with permanent collections such as Science & Life and The Melbourne Story featuring the Museum’s most popular object, Phar Lap. Each space offers a unique backdrop that can be brought to life to allow your guests to reconnect with history at this impressive, modern venue.

Main Foyer and the Walk
The soaring ceilings of The Main Foyer and the Walk, are set in front of the dramatic living Forest Gallery, which features a misty fern gully with a waterfall. A contemporary space filled with natural light; it is ideal for grand dinners or large welcome receptions.
The Melbourne Story
Visitors to Melbourne Museum will be transported back in time, through artefacts, immersive experiences and multimedia exhibits recreating life in Melbourne since the 1830s in The Melbourne Gallery. With Phar Lap as the central exhibit in the space, the gallery allows visitors to move through chronologically, beginning with the 1830s right through until today – a truly unique space for your next corporate dinner or cocktail party.
Natural light bathes the dramatic split level gallery – Te Pasifika – where canoes are suspended overhead as if they are cresting a wave, whilst three elaborate, hand painted crab claw sails appear ready to catch the next gust of wind … a refreshing space for cocktail parties, pre-dinner drinks, or an intimate dinner for up to 60 guests.
Discovery Centre Seminar Room
The Discovery Centre Seminar Room is located on the lower ground level, and is also suitable for small seminars. Audio-visual facilities may be hired from the Museum for the Seminar room, however all equipment must be hired from outside suppliers.
Wild- Be surrounded by the wonderful diversity of mammals, birds and reptiles from around the world. The exhibition Wild: Amazing animals in a changing world features more than 750 animals. It examines how they are affected by climate change and human activity, and what we can do to help them. This exhibition space is perfect for corporate cocktail parties and intimate dinners.
The Discovery Centre Foyer is a dramatic architectural space with angled steel columns and soaring glass walls, and features a view of the Melbourne city skyline and an outdoor courtyard. Located at the entrance to The Theatre and boasting an abundance of natural light, this area is an ideal setting for pre-dinner drinks, small exhibitions or product launches and cocktail parties.
Treetops is a purpose-designed contemporary private function space featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and ideal for meetings, workshops and lunches – and is a favoured space for weddings and corporate dinners. The adjoining North Terrace is ideal for ceremonies, pre-dinner drinks, and team building activities or as a break out space for coffee and/or lunch during daytime events.
Melbourne Museum Theatre
Melbourne Museum Theatre seats up to 200 people and is perfect for product launches, film screenings, stand up comedy, lectures and presentations. Features include: Raked seating, Projection screen, Stage, Stereo sound, Slide projection, PowerPoint projection,
Video projection, DVD projection, Green room, Showers, Theatre bar & Full theatrical lighting.
Birrarung is set within Bunjilaka, a living cultural centre made up of several key gallery spaces for Victoria’s indigenous community. It is no accident that the space curves like a river, as Birrarung is the Boon Wurrung and Woi Wurrung name for the Yarra River. Birrarung has a hand carved zinc wall and leads via double doors to an outdoor area, Milarri Garden. Birrarung provides the perfect opportunity for guests to enjoy both a contemporary indoor venue and outdoor gardens.
The Touring Hall
The Touring Hall Foyer is a dramatic architectural space with angled steel columns and soaring glass walls, and features a view of the Melbourne city skyline and an outdoor courtyard with large sandstone columns set in a landscaped garden. Boasting an abundance of natural light, this area is an ideal setting for pre-dinner drinks, small exhibitions or product launches, cocktail parties or wedding receptions. Please Note that this space has limited availability throughout the year due to exhibitions in this area.
Science & Life Gallery
Entertain within the central Technology Meeting Space, framed by the Science & Life Gallery, which draws on 150 years of scientific research and collecting. A contemporary space with brightly coloured primary walls and several interactive exhibit spaces, this area is ideal for product or car launches, presentation dinners or cocktail parties. Explore the wonder and fascination of the human body. The Mind & Body exhibition explores human biology in a straightforward and engaging way.

Dinosaur Walk allows you to duck beneath the belly of a massive mamenchisaurus, contemplate the speed of the small and agile hypsilophodon and walk up high to where the flying reptiles soar. This unusual space is perfect for a cocktail style event with a difference.
The Evolution Gallery is a wonderful split-level white super-space where several dinosaurs are presented in a dramatic setting in the “Dinosaurs in Time’ exhibition. This gallery is like a time capsule, summarising 3500 million years of life on earth in two memorable exhibitions – an intriguing and fascinating backdrop to your next cocktail party or exclusive dinner ‘with a difference’!

The Melbourne Museum Car Park offers 900 bays, is adjacent to the building and has direct lift access to the entrance of The Melbourne Museum.
Should you wish to settle your guest parking charges, we can arrange your guests’ parking to be charged to you directly.
The Melbourne Museum is easily accessible by tram routes 86 and 96.
