Following the highly successful inaugural National Chicken Sandwich Day in 2017 – instigated unashamedly by Peter Rowland, the Melbourne catering icon synonymous with this delicacy – Round 2 of this gift to Australian foodies is back with a vengeance on 1 November, 2018.
Renowned for their love of parties, Peter Rowland has achieved cult status for absolute chicken sandwich perfection. A mainstay of many Melbourne events and celebrations, this is one recipe that has been closely guarded with lock and key since 1962.
A universally loved highlight at cocktail parties, luncheons and special events particularly in Australia‟s foodie heartland Melbourne, the chicken sandwich is simply synonymous with celebration.
Scheduled annually during the iconic Melbourne Cup Carnival – 1st November, the chicken sandwich has become an absolute race day staple, with the Peter Rowland team expecting to plate up more than 10,000 chicken sandwiches over the course of this years Carnival.

Peter Rowland‟s famous chicken sandwich will forever remain not just a highly acclaimed, but sentimental component of the company’s history given that chicken rolls were the first ever dish sold by its founder now Chairman, Peter Rowland, OAM, on the back beach of Portsea back in 1962.
The company’s iconic chicken sandwich has existed every year since, with Melbourne‟s party scene – young and old – clamouring for the secret recipe. Company founder Peter Rowland says he will never tell.
“The secret is in the mayonnaise and that is a secret we guard closely in our company. Only a privileged few have been taken into the inner sanctum and taught the recipe that I created all those years ago. Of course everyone asks and I have been offered greats sums of money for the recipe,” Mr Rowland said.
This year, Peter Rowland has appointed 5 National Chicken Sandwich Day Official Ambassadors to help share the chicken sandwich love.
