Let’s Talk Christmas, Good Food and an End-of-Year Celebration
There’s usually a moment in October when someone asks, “Have we organised the Christmas party yet?” Suddenly, the end of the year feels a lot closer.
Between finishing projects, coordinating leave and trying to find a date everyone can attend, organising the team celebration can slip down the list. But getting a few things sorted now makes it easier to put together an occasion people will look forward to.
At Peter Rowland, we love a reason to gather around good food. And after a busy year, bringing your team together to share a meal is a lovely way to finish.
Get a date in the diary
You don’t need a finished plan to get started. A rough guest count, a budget and a couple of possible dates are enough to begin talking to venues and caterers.
Before choosing a Friday night, check what works for your team. A long lunch might be easier to attend, particularly for people with evening commitments. An earlier celebration could also give everyone a little breathing room before December gets busy.
Once you have a date, send it around. The menu and other details can follow.
What would your team actually enjoy?
Think about the people coming. Would they enjoy dressing up for dinner, or would they feel more comfortable with a drink in hand and canapés making their way around the room?
A seated lunch gives everyone time to settle in, share a meal and catch up. A cocktail party works well when you want people to mingle across teams. And if getting everyone out of the office is tricky, bringing catering into the workplace can still make the day feel special.
There’s no need to overcomplicate it. Choose a format that suits your team, with enough time for people to relax and enjoy themselves.
Give the food some thought
Food is a big part of the Christmas party – and often the part people talk about afterwards.
The menu should suit the way you’re celebrating. If guests will be standing and chatting, choose food that’s easy to eat, with enough served throughout the event to keep everyone satisfied. If you’re sitting down together, shared dishes can get the table talking, while a plated meal gives the celebration a more formal feel.
For an Australian Christmas, there’s plenty of room for fresh, seasonal food alongside those familiar festive flavours. You might finish with something sweet or make dessert a moment of its own before everyone heads home.
It’s worth asking your catering team what will work best for your guest numbers, setting and timing. They can help you shape a menu that fits the occasion.
Sort the practical details early
A few small jobs are much easier to handle before the week of the party.
Ask for dietary requirements with your RSVPs, including any allergies, and share them with your caterer. Confirm when final numbers are due and who will be the contact on the day.
If you’re hosting at the office, talk through where food will be prepared and served, what equipment is needed and how the space will be set up. If there are speeches or presentations, let your catering team know so they can plan service around them.
Getting these details sorted means you can spend less of the celebration answering questions and more of it enjoying the company.
